Description

The origins of this recording are quite funny. Our sponsor asked us to record a horn concerto which he remembered hearing as a youth by the Bohemian composer, Vincenc Mašek.

After doing a serious internet search, I found out that the piece was in the music library in Prague. I wrote there requesting a copy of the score and parts, but after many weeks had passed, I had received no reply. Attempts were made to reach someone there by phone, but this also proved to be fruitless; in the end I never reached anyone there at all.

Because our sponsor insisted on having this piece recorded, I had gone ahead and booked a recording studio, and hired all of the musicians assuming that the music would arrive. It was now a month before this recording was to take place but there was still no sign of the music.

Just as I was about to call my sponsor and tell him the sad news, an envelope arrived from the library in Prague. Elated, I tore it open, only to find that half of what I needed was there.  Aside from there being no score, the 2nd violin and cello parts were missing as well as half the orchestral wind parts.

In despair, I called my friend, the musicologist Bert Hagels, and asked him if he could offer a solution; perhaps another source where the music could be found, or another piece by Mašek which might appease my sponsor? Instead, Bert suggested that we record the three symphonies by Bernhard Romberg which had not been published or recorded. Not only was our sponsor happy with the result, he chose to have one of them played at his wedding ceremony!

See if you think they are worthy for such an important event! Have a listen!

…Michael Alexander Willens holds the key, that turns the symphonic output of this ‘forgotten’ composer into an event that should not be missed by those who want to discover more of this ‘in between Haydn and Beethoven’ period…
