Description

It was astonishing for me to learn that not only was the first performance of Mozart’s twentieth piano concerto performed WITHOUT a rehearsal, but that it came off as a resounding success as well. That would be quite an amazing feat to pull off even today!

Due to its minor key, it was the only piano concerto of Mozart’s (aside from the C minor) which was performed regularly during the 19th century. This was most likely due to the fact that its dark, brooding atmosphere appealed to the aesthetic of that time.

Concerto No. 27 is Mozart’s last piano concerto and sadly it was to be his last public performance as a soloist. It was premiered in Vienna as part of a benefit concerto for the clarinettist, Joseph Beer. The melody of the refrain of the last movement is from a little strophic song entitled “Longing for Spring” written in a rollicking 6/8 meter.

Definitely worth listening to – why not give it a try?
