Early on, the timpani emerged as my particular favorite among the classical percussion instruments. From slender, overtone-rich tone colorations embedded in the trumpet sounds of the baroque era, to voluminous sound clouds of the romantic era, to experimental playing techniques of new music, simply everything is represented sonically. In addition, it is always a great feeling in the trio with conductor and concertmaster to lead the orchestra from the back.
