Description

To me Anton Eberl’s music is one of the true bridges linking Mozart to Beethoven. Interestingly he has an actual connection to both. Mozart assigned one of Eberl’s piano sonatas to all of his piano students to use as
an exercise. Up until WW ll it was assumed that the sonata was in fact written by Mozart.

At the premiere of Beethoven’s famous Eroica symphony, one of the other pieces on the program was Eberl’s symphony in Eb. The reviewer was very positive about Eberl’s symphony but extremely negative about Beethoven’s! Of course time has changed all of that, now the Beethoven is a well known and loved piece of standard repertoire whereas almost no one has heard of Eberl, much less his symphony!

Let’s hope these recordings of Eberl’s piano concertos will change all of that. Give them a try, you’re sure to like them; I certainly do!

The performances are both vibrant and technically self-assured, and revel in the drama inherent in duo piano music.

In Summa: eine CD, die verdienstvoll Licht auf einen Mozart-Kollegen wirft, der im Zuge der Musikgeschichte im Schatten verblieben ist.
