On March 19, 2022 we will perform Telemann’s “Music for the dedication of the Great Church of St. Michael in Hamburg” at the 25. Magdeburger Telemann-Festtage.

This remarkable piece was one of the last things Telemann wrote. It describes in great musical detail the destructive fire of the church and the devastation caused by it as well as the rebuilding process and finally the dedication. It features an all star cast of soloists and a full orchestra including six trumpets and two timpani.

In 1750, the “Hamburg Michel”, the youngest of the city’s five main churches, fell victim to a fire caused by lightning. This catastrophe stirred up the citizens of Hamburg, who saw it as a divine punishment. People tried to make explanations in penitential services and collected money for the reconstruction. In 1762, the church was consecrated with a festive service in the presence of the Hamburg authorities and a huge crowd. Telemann wrote a large-scale oratorio for the occasion, which was appropriate to the significance of the day and which fit into the service liturgically. The poetry was by the preacher Johann Joachim Daniel Zimmermann, Telemann’s preferred Hamburg librettist.

The Kölner Akademie under the direction of Michael Alexander Willens has produced several spectacular Telemann recordings in recent years. Now the ensemble is bringing its interpretation of the inaugural music of the Hamburg landmark to the Magdeburg Telemann Festival for the first time.
